BiographyIn 1991 a thirteen-year-old Malcolm Paul started writing music with computers. This led to an interest in DJing and by the summer of 1995 he had received his first residency, having learnt to mix a year earlier. Assuming the alias Tom Sawyer he was offered sets at nearly every hard dance music event in and around his hometown, the English city of Lincoln.
As well as nightclubs in Sheffield and Gainsborough he played at venues as diverse as a barn in the village of Metheringham and a country club in Ashby De La Launde. He stopped using the Tom Sawyer alias in 1997 to coincide with a new deeper style and was asked to be a resident at a prominent Lincoln bar, which he left after nearly three years to recommit himself to the underground scene. One of the ways he achieved this was to take an interest in the scene of North America and Malc has worked for Washington DC-based promoter and DJ collective StoneFinger Productions since 2000. StoneFinger helped organise Malc's tireless 2002/2003 tour of North America - in 10 nights he played at 8 events (5 clubs, 2 radio shows and a TV show) in the US and Canada, which he was invited to talk about on BBC Radio Lincolnshire in spring 2003. As well as obtaining half-a-dozen residencies in Lincoln between 1995 and 2002, Malc has DJed at more than 20 international events, the most recent of which being Cubik, named America's number one club numerous times by magazines including URB and BPM. In the first half of 2006 Malcolm Paul has been busy with a number of music-related ventures and has been spending an increasing amount of time in the recording studio. He hopes to release several tracks before the end of the year and secure a new residency in the UK and more international bookings. References And Articles
"A DJ that really kicks your ass on the dance floor!"
"I did very much enjoy not just what you were spinning, but your mixing skills were quite impressive."
"Awesome job... mixed it up quite nicely!"
"Damn bro; you sure can throw down some phat ass prog breaks!" Reference by Carl Saunders, Rhythmic Medicine promoter, September 2003: "Thanks again for playing at Scratched... I thought your set was absolutely quality and was quite surprised by the style of tunes (in a good way). I'll definitely get you down again if I do something a bit more worthwhile for you." Reference by Rob Sharp of Club-Influence.com, April 2002: "Malc is an extremely talented individual, not only is he a cracking DJ, he has also produced music, built up his own studio, given performances in the capital of America, Washington, DC, and won awards for web design. To look at this fella you wouldn't think that he had accomplished all of this by himself but believe me, he has." Featured in BustAChill.com, November 2001: "His name is Malcolm Paul. Perhaps you've heard of him. He's a progressive DJ from England, and he's on the rise. Think Nick Warren, Max Graham, John Digweed, and Sasha added up and then divided by the new version of Paul Oakenfold. The result is approximately Malcolm. Can't quite imagine that? Then go and check him out for yourself." Chris C's review of Malc's first acetate (Humanity by Star People), for To The Core (UK dance music magazine), July 1996: "There aren't too many details to give about this one simply because it's waiting to be picked up by a label for release. That said, this track (a debut from two talented Lincoln DJs) is certainly good enough to find itself on general release before long. Very German in feel and construction with a deep throbbing b-line and ethereal trippy riff, it stands out by way of using a neat breakbeat to drive it along - unusual in trance tunes. Maybe requiring just a little more in production, I'd recommend the likes of UK44 and Indica to check it out..." |
Malc taught himself to mix on belt-driven turntables 11 years ago. The first venue he played at is now a lap-dancing club called Cloud 9! He has been interviewed on radio and TV shows in the UK and North America. |
